Call for Papers : The 2015 Vernacular Architecture Forum

Chicago, IL, June 6, 2015
Deadline: Dec 22, 2014

Panel Title: (Re)Building Public Memory

We are looking for a third presenter for a panel that focuses on how treatment of the built environment contributes to constructing or
erasing public memory. The two papers already chosen include a critique of how historic preservation's emphasis on building age can skew or
erase public memory and an analysis of the destruction of buildings that symbolize working class identity in an effort to move to a
hegemonic middle class identity. Both papers focus on the integral relationship between public memory and the built environment in a
Midwestern post-industrial context.

The panel is looking for a third paper that will complement this theme. Possible areas of discussion could be:

- Public memory and the post-modern landscape
- A focus on post-industrial buildings and their important roles in communities
- Public interpretation of buildings and/or built environment
- Historians' and preservationists' actions post-WWII towards preserving buildings
- The role of urban renewal in erasing/shaping/constructing community identity
- The relationship between building documentation and public memory
- Changing use of buildings through shifts in industry and demographics
- Public participation in historic building treatment and community planning

Successful submissions will have a focus on both material culture and public memory in the post- WWII context. Papers do not need to focus on
Chicago architecture, but are welcome. Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome. The conference will take place in Chicago, Illinois at
Roosevelt University on Saturday, June 6, 2015. More information about the conference can be found at www.vafchicago.org
