Call of papers: Cities: A Bigger Picture

Cities: A Bigger Picture
The First Annual Koç University Archaeology and History of Art Graduate Student Symposium: "Cities: A Bigger Picture." will take place on 27 April, 2013 at Research Center for Anatolian Civilization (RCAC) at Istanbul.

According to Aristotle, "Human beings are political animals" who are civilized creatures and often reside in the "polis": the city. Clearly, cities are important agents to observe and understand the interrelations of people, arts, and culture. As the majority of the world's population now lives in cities, studies relating to cities are a common ground which can bring scholars together. However, many scholarly approaches to the study of cities can be quite narrow and divided in terms of periodization, geography and methodology. This symposium suggests that a wider focus on the study of cities can work to diffuse the boundaries between departments, universities, and even countries and foster a multi- disciplinary approach to research. Fellow graduate students are encouraged to push beyond their comfort zone in their research to consider cities in Anatolia and how they relate to a "bigger picture". The intention of this symposium is to cultivate a re-evaluation and reform of the existing approaches to city-specific research through interdisciplinary collaboration that stretches across geographical, temporal and methodological boundaries.

We invite papers which demonstrate a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to research about some aspects of the city. Some possible topics could be:

-Comparative analysis between cities in Anatolia and Western Europe,
-New methods for urban archaeology
-Contemporary challenges in preservation of urban sites
-Cities of pilgrimage and travel accounts
-Charitable institutions in cities and their impacts
-Sacred spaces in cities
-Artistic components of a city
-Emergence and reemergence of cities
- Exhibiting cities
