the WAN Sustainable Building of the Year Award 2012. Time Running Out for Sustainable Design?

Time Running Out for Sustainable Design?
Hello Everyone,

As you may know, we recently launched a new award as part of our ECOWAN programme - the WAN Sustainable Building of the Year Award 2012.

Sustainability has become such a key part of any building design that these days it almost goes without saying that a building should be 'sustainable' - it forms part of the criteria for all our awards and indeed comes 'as standard' in almost every client brief - but sustainable design is about more than just meeting energy consumption targets or achieving the highest LEED rating; a building may do all of this without being great architecture, functionally or aesthetically.

3d printer filament made of wood

3d printer filament made of wood

This new addition to the maker's palette of 3D printer filaments comes from the mind of [Kai Parthy]. The new filament – going by the name Laywood – is a mix of recycled wood fibers and polymer binders that can be melted and extruded just like any other 3D printer filament.

How I Learned About 3D Printing from CyArk

How I Learned About 3D Printing from CyArk

A guest blog from a Middle School Science Fair

Earlier in 2012, as a part of my 2012 Science Fair Project at St. Catherine School, I wanted to learn about 3D printing. I started by researching what exactly 3D printing is and how it's already used by many different industries today. Compared to 2D printing (think of your school report being printed on a flat piece of paper), 3D printing starts with the same first step: the computer sending the information to the printer. Next, instead of putting layers of ink toner on paper, the 3D printer lays down layers of plastic, metal, or other material on top of each other over a base, building up a 3D object thin-layer by thin-layer.

an example in compact living, the rectangular 'house in hiyoshi' by japanese firm EANA is located on a fragment of land on the southern end of a
public park in yokohama city. the three-storey timber frame structure organizes its spaces by manipulating floor-to-height distances to adapt to
future needs. the entry level, which has a lower ceiling, contains two bedrooms, services and storage, over a polished concrete floor foundation.
a staircase leads up to the second-storey and main social space with a kitchen, living and dining room, and has a ceiling at four meters. a large
full-height north-facing window stretches almost to the extents of the walls and looks out over the park, allowing the residents to be first row
spectators over the natural scenery. a thinner metal staircase connects to the third level landing and rooftop terrace. a horizontal strip window
reaches the entire width of the footprint allowing southern light to warm the interior, while the owners may reside in a private exterior space.

Description from the architects
Developed in close response to the rhythms and materials of a subtropical climate, we sought to embrace the fundamental environmental intentions of the program while creating a contemporary place of strong individual character and quiet complexity. The street facing facade of the home is closed, contrasting the entirely open south facade towards the lap pool with breathtaking views across the valley and surrounding mountains of  tropical rain forest.

'The first real problem I faced in my life was that of beauty,' wrote the poet-playwright- novelist Yukio Mishima, in Temple of the Golden Pavilion as he pondered beauty's relevance, meanings, and the spell it cast over him. Beauty is complicated by the word beauty itself. Limited or overloaded, beauty has been celebrated as essential or denounced as irrelevant. The existence of beauty has been challenged, called a search for Eldorado. Some find no beauty in life, a recurring motif in subcultures, music lyrics, and the notes left by suicides. Others dismiss that perspective, arguing that common sense, experience, and multidisciplinary research reveal the reality and centrality of beauty in our lives. But what exactly is beauty? Speculations about the nature of beauty are various and contradictory. Some philosophers have argued that it will remain a mystery. Other theorists have held less modest beliefs, arguing that beauty expresses a basic spiritual reality, has universal physical properties, or is an experience and construction of mind and culture. The beauty 'project' will explore, assess, and map a number of key core themes.

Historicize space! This injunction has not always been on the agenda of historians. Traditionally, historians were tempted to take space for granted. The boundaries of the nineteenth century nation-state were regarded as the natural presupposition of much historical research. These established "mental maps" still continue to influence the structure of history writing today. However, historians were not entirely immune to the effects of the "spatial turn" and can probably no longer be accused to treat space as if it were "packed solidly on to the head of a pin," as Edward W. Soja did in his Postmodern Geographies in 1989.

Questions of space and place affect the very way in which we experience and recreate the world. Wars are fought over both real and imagined spaces; boundaries are erected against the "Other" constructing a lived landscape of division and disenfranchisement; while ideology constructs a national identity based upon the dialectics of inclusion and exclusion. The construction of space and place is also a fundamental aspect of the creative arts either through the art of reconstruction of a known space or in establishing a relationship between the audience and the performance. Politics, power and knowledge are also fundamental components of space as is the relationship between visibility and invisibility. This new inter- and multi-disciplinary conference project seeks to explore these and other topics and open up a dialogue about the politics and practices of space and place. We seek submissions from a range of disciplines including archaeology, architecture, urban geography, the visual and creative arts, philosophy and politics and also actively encourage practitioners and non-academics with an interest in the topic to participate.
We welcome traditional papers, preformed panels of papers, workshop proposals and other forms of performance – recognising that different disciplines express themselves in different mediums. Submissions are sought on any aspect of space and place, including the following:
