Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology / CHYBIK+KRISTOF Associated Architects

The project by CHYBIK+KRISTOF Associated Architects for the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Technology is based on the idea of maximal respect to the character of the park's locality in the city center for which it is designed. It is a complex of separate pavilions based on the floor plan of the existing built-up area of provisional assembled buildings, so-called likusáks. The concept of the project presupposes an interaction between education, culture and the public. Its realization will significantly contribute to revitalize the neglected eastern part of the park on Kraví hora.

suckerPUNCH Lunar Crater Cultural Center Competition Proposal by Gabriel a. Huerta

This Digital design of the Lunar Crater Cultural Center (LC3) is based on a vision that the proposed design is not an end product, but the starting point for an ever-evolving building on the lunar surface. By utilizing up and coming fabrication technologies like Counter Crafting, the LC3 would be a conglomeration of "3D printed" components. The technology would not only allow for minor modifications and refurbishment, but could potentially support the emergent expansion of the base building form to accommodate future programmatic needs.

PETER EISENMAN

PETER EISENMAN IN TOKYO: KOIZUMI LIGHTING THEATER

The Deconstructivism is not an architectural movement that gained many adherents in Japan. The image of a building (de)composed of recumbent walls, protruding beams, twisted columns, broken roofs, as if it had been hit by a cataclysmic event, did not seem to be popular among the Japanese, whose buildings have been periodically destroyed by earthquakes, tsunamis and typhoons. This was coupled with the financial meltdown that hit the archipelago in the mid 90's, as well as the devastating effects of the Kobe earthquake. In this context, I was surprised to find this building in Tokyo by Peter Eisenman, one of the leading theorists and exponents of Deconstructivism.

The Urban Community of Bordeaux (CUB) and MVRDV present the master plan for Bastide Niel, a 35ha extension of Bordeaux' city centre onto the right bank of Garonne River. The dense urban master plan will offer 3200 homes, offices and urban amenities, respect the existing fabric of the city and become one of the largest zero energy neighbourhoods in the world. The project Bastide Niel, with an envisioned urban program of up to 375.000m2 is regarded the most significant contemporary urban intervention in Bordeaux. But the character of the new neighbourhood will be intimate: a 'capillary city': A contemporary update of the European city: Combining history, human scale and individualism with density and sustainability. Construction is to start in 2014.

Rather than replicate a tired, traditional school archetype solution, the design embraces the challenge of modernity with heroic determination. The heart of the building is an abstract yet powerful multinational expression of the neighborhood cultural identity – an environment to fuel the aspirations of students and community.

Ørestad College was built in immediate continuation of new legislation in the Danish educational sector in 2005 and is an educational building remarkable for its complete absence of class rooms in the traditional sense. At present, the gymnasium is the most-applied-for in Denmark.

The Eleanor Roosevelt College, an undergraduate campus at University of California San Diego , creates a home for a college which had previously been spread throughout the campus, lacking a cohesive unity. Located on eleven acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Salk Institute, the site drops over seventy feet to the west, ending at a busy boulevard, North Torrey Pines Road. The site is bound on the east by Ridge Walk, one of the University's primary pedestrian thoroughfares, while Scholars Drive, a primary bus route, cuts the site in two. Shielding the campus from the traffic to the west, connecting to Ridge Walk on the east and overcoming the division caused by Scholars Drive were among the primary planning concerns.

Modern Home in Mexico Incorporating Its Natural Environment

modern residence 4 Modern Home in Mexico Incorporating Its Natural Environment
Casa Cardenas was designed by Parque Humano and is located in Valle de Bravo, Mexico. The residence consists of two levels: the upper floor accommodates the living area and the kitchen, while the ground level hosts the bedrooms. Here is more from the architects: "For the concept of this project we have taken advantage of the triangular character of the plot, the slope of the land and the views towards the Cerro Gordo´s Natural Reserve. The building has been conceived as a homogeneous mass, hollowing out a huge opening with an inviting forced perspective effect caused by the asymmetric walls that frames the natural panorama. With the objective of building an interior/exterior relation, the volumetric setting of sloping walls and slabs allow the visual journey from the interior space, deeply linking the project to the existing landscape, it is the exterior landscape which organizes our interior spaces". How do you find the architecture and design of this contemporary residence? [Photography by Paul Rivera/ArchPhoto]

MOPI Elementary School

MOPI Elementary School

This stunning façade belongs to MOPI Elementary School, located in a very urban yet very green area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  The façade is an abstraction of a tree and evokes the images of the neighboring forest.  The building by Brazilian firm Mareines + Patalano was conceived as four separate volumes connected by balconies, and forming a "U" shape that opens to the forest behind.  Translucent glass encloses most of the classrooms, flooding them with light.  To create accessibility for wheelchairs, all levels are connected by 8% incline ramps.  When finished, the top floor of the school will be a roof garden that overlooks the mountains.
