Planning and developing housing infrastructure to meet the demands of regional population growth.

Governments around the Middle East have recognised the crucial need for housing development and residential infrastructure to meet the ever rising demands of their populations with the ultimate aim of ensuring stability and sustainable development in their respective countries. This has generated a huge boom in the regional housing market with governments planning for the construction of over a million housing units within the coming decade. 2013 will be a critical year in terms of the activity taking place in the regional housing market as regional governments continue to take steps towards the realisation of residential housing complexes on an unprecedented scale.
This pivotal summit will target the countries that have confirmed their commitment to this vision of providing housing on an unprecedented scale.

Call of Papers: Knowing (by) Designing

http://bydesigning.net/

Main Menu

Research in creative disciplines reaches far beyond the conventional understanding of what knowledge is and what it is meant for. Practicing arts, design, music or architecture, when conducted reflectively, naturally involves types of knowing that, unlike in exact sciences, are based on individual, subjective interpretation of the context within which the designer/artist works. As such, the critical reflection of the artist on his/her own practice makes it more coherent, better, influential, unique. At the same time worthwhile chef-d'oeuvres, works of art, designs essentially extend and enrich our understanding of the world.
The conference "Knowing (by) Designing" strives to explore the developments in research evolved around creative practices – specifically focusing on architecture, design, arts and music. It is the third conference in the cycle starting with "The Unthinkable Doctorate" in 2005 and successfully followed by the "Communicating (by) Design" in 2009 at the Sint-Lucas School of Architecture in Brussels.
The 2013 event will aim to investigate ways in which creative processes and activities develop all possible aspects of knowing.

What is Self-Similarity?

What is Self-Similarity?

Self-similarity is defined as the geometrical resemblance between the parts of a shape and the shape as a whole.

The diagram below indicates four rectangles, the first two rectangles are similar in the strict mathematical sense ie. although there scales are different their proportions are the same. the second two sets of rectangles are NOT similar as their proportions are quite different.

SCI-Arc Graduation Pavilion Competition Library Exhibition

SCI-Arc Graduation Pavilion Competition Library Exhibition

Opening this Friday, October 19th, at 7pm in the SCI-Arc gallery, the Graduation Pavilion Competition Exhibition documents the four faculty entries in the competition organized this past summer to select a winning design for the ArtPlace-funded outdoor pavilion, scheduled to be completed in spring 2013. invited faculty members Ramiro Diaz-Granados, Elena Manferdini, Marcelo Spina (winning entry) and Tom Wiscombe to submit concepts for a design of an innovative, technically implementable, and visually remarkable multi-purpose pavilion. The resulting stage is set to host several upcoming graduation ceremonies, noteworthy symposia and presentations, as well as outreach cultural events developed in partnership with the surrounding Arts Community. The exhibition is on view until December 2. More images and architects' description of their proposals after the break.

The winning entry, League of Shadows, designed by Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich of PATTERNS, fully exploits the fundamental aspect underlying the pavilion, its temporal use as an outdoor event space. Their proposal to design a vaulted pavilion allows the structure a double function: that of an outdoor public event space, and a more iconic one of a formal beacon reasserting SCI-Arc's institutional presence in downtown. Due to its placement in the SCI-Arc parking lot, the pavilion will serve as a landmark, a natural marquee of the SCI-Arc campus and the Arts District, and it will become a suitable venue for SCI-Arc to engage outside audiences from the downtown community and the larger area.

Title: Amorphis
Principal: Ramiro Diaz-Granados
Designer: Matthew Au
Assistants: Mike Woodruff, Yogi Yoswara, Nedi Dimova
As a continuation of the conceptual and tectonic ambitions of Go Figure, a SCI-Arc Gallery installation designed and exhibited by Amorphis in spring 2011, our proposal for the SCI-Arc Graduation Pavilion raises these stakes both extensively and intensively. Extensively, the project asserts its presence by dissipating its figures in a way that reconfigures the site itself. Intensively, the project folds in on itself by compacting and huddling a set of delineated figures in order to produce a large constellation of tectonic lines, some thin, some thick, and some in between, that broaches on visceral imagery.
Courtesy of Ramiro Diaz-Granados
By scaling up, moving outside, and being liberated by the comfort of a white bounding box, the ensemble of figures finds a new comfort zone within the jungle of asphalt, concrete, chain link, barbed wire, parking stripes, graffiti, and the seemingly endless grit of the SCI-Arc surroundings. The pavilion is located near the chamfered corner at 4th and Merrick St. This does two things. It capitalizes on the western exposure of sunlight to produce maximum amount of shade in the late afternoons for future events and it provides a visible and engaging presence for SCI-Arc at an urban intersection.

Design Team: Tom Wiscombe, Zidan Zhao, Joel Kerner, Ethan Lee, Yong Ha Kim, Koho Lin, Mitch Rocheleau, Jili Huang
Type: Multifunctional Cultural Pavilion
Size: 6,000 FT2
The design is based on creating the illusion of figures pushing outwards into a loose outer skin. Mysterious distortions and formal fall-off effects are produced, similar to those which occur when you push your fist through a rubber sheet. Three-dimensional mass effects are enhanced by two-dimensional tattoos that are inscribed into the most intensely stretched areas. Nevertheless, tattoos are developed on their own terms in parallel, as objects, with their own internal rules and figuration. The interface of mass-object and drawing-object creates productive feedback in terms of the overall wholeness of the piece.
Courtesy of Tom Wiscombe Design
The enclosure varies from razor thin to thick. A delaminated inner liner, characterized by inverted peaks and distortions, tracks along with, but also deviates from, the outer skin. Some of these inner features are made visible through massive apertures in the enclosure. The enclosure itself begins to read as volume.
Courtesy of Tom Wiscombe Design
The construction is based on supercomponents, or the idea that chunk-logic is better than frame and infill logic. Industrial shrink wrapping, normally used for encapsulating helicopters and tanks, is shrunk around a straight steel frame with curve-defining rolled aluminum pipe and nylon straps. Components are fabricated on the ground as volumetric chunks, lifted into place, and spliced together structurally, leaving visible joints. Ultimately, the weird figuration of the building mass is also present in each of the supercomponents, creating a novel part to whole relationship.

Design Architect: Atelier Manferdini, Los Angeles, CA (U.S.A.)
Design Team: Elena Manferdini, Laura Ferrarello, Erin Templeton, Vanessa Teng, Luis Tornel
Engineering: Fabio Zangoli (U.S.A.)
The proposal for a new SCI-Arc Graduation Pavilion seeks to create a garden for the community of downtown and offer to the students a place to gather and rest in the shade all year long, rather than a graduation ceremony tent used for only one day. The massing of the pavilion is obtained by the compilation of nine rotated cubes, combined on a three-dimensional grid. The nine modules are composed on the parking lot in order create a large event space through the simplicity of their interlocked composition and their large scale. These masses, wrapped by a network of various natural paintings, are "presences" rather than "sculptures".
Courtesy of Atelier Manferdini
The subject of the printed images reinterprets the topic of "Living Garden" through a contemporary use of digital scanning techniques and scripting algorithms. In particular, the original subjects of the graphic depictions are 3D scanned acquisitions of natural elements such as trees, flowers and insects. These analogue geometries are scripted into striped patterns that follow the cubic modularity of the pavilion massing. Once the original image is transformed by algorithmic iterations, the geometrical matter that constitutes the photorealistic representation of nature and its details disappear into geometrical abstract stripes that get stretched as a digital canvas onto the nine cube structure.
Courtesy of Atelier Manferdini
The images, although super-flat, will produce an intense three-dimensionality because of the hyperrealism of the vivid digital production that constitutes a contemporary "Tableau Vivant". The "Living Picture" is considered successful in its element of theatrical engagement with the public. In other words a "Tableau vivant" is about the relationship between the artistic production and the awareness of the beholder. The basic claim is that this proposal for SCI-Arc Graduation Pavilion implies a dynamic relationship between the students that experience the garden on a daily basis and the downtown community at large that participates as an audience.

Urban life and Contemporary Arts
The urban life which has began to kate its recent forms beginning from 19th century, is one of the most determinant phenomena on human psychology, culture and politics.
Forms of urban culture, new industrial develepments, crowd, traffic, street life, sociability, communication, rebellions and political oppression are all to be traced in the city life. Urban life as a scene, tool or subject of contemporary and modern art needs to be redisccussed in the new millenium along with its historical background.
CONTEMP ART '13 Conference will open its doors to styles and approaches produced by artists and scholars from different geographies, identities and tendencies of contemporary arts.
With a critical perspective, CONTEMP ART '13, hosted by MSFAU (Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) will be organized from 10th to 12th (10-11-12) of April, 2013, by DAKAM (Eastern Mediterranean Academic Research Center).
