Preserving Yemen's Cultural Heritage: The Yemen Manuscript Digitization Project

Preserving Yemen's Cultural Heritage: The Yemen Manuscript Digitization Project

27 July 2011

Source: Schmidtke&Thiele
Second Author:
Sabine Schmidtke and Jan Thiele provide a history of the manuscripts from the little known Zaydi tradition of Yemen. Centuries old, these contain invaluable information about Islamic thought and exhaustive efforts to preserve the manuscripts are underway.

Introduction

The size of the manuscript holdings of the many public and private libraries of Yemen makes it one of the most important collections in the world. Estimated at 50,000 manuscripts, the holdings of these libraries rival those of the National Library of Egypt or the Süleymaniye Library of Istanbul. Equally intriguing is the character of these libraries' collections - a product of Yemen's unique geography and history - and the nature of its scholarly communities.

 Introduction

EcoArch_200x250This fourth International Conference on Harmonisation between Architecture and Nature (Eco-Architecture 2012) follows the three successful previous meetings which were held in the New Forest, UK (2006); in the Algarve, Portugal (2008) and in A Coruña, Spain (2010).

The development of Eco-Architecture is driven by the depletion of natural resources and the need to preserve the balance of nature.

Eco-Architecture provides imaginative and expressive solutions and is characterized by the generation of highly creative designs. It has important cultural as well as architectural impacts.

Eco-Architecture is in harmony with nature, including its immediate environs. Decisions are taken on ecological grounds concerning locations, siting and orientation, as well as the well-informed choice of materials.

What is it that identifies the planned new hotel and holiday apartment community? Being near to Bled definitely matters. Bled is a town with a long-standing tourist tradition, surrounded by beautiful nature. It offers many possibilities of contributing to tourist offerings, such as skiing, mountaineering, extreme sports, hiking, as well as cultural and culinary diversity. Further qualities of Bled are easy accessibility, as well proximity of various larger Slovenian, Austrian and Italian cities, and the Mediterranean coast. Yet all of these characteristics apply equally to all the numerous hotels in the town and the vicinity. So what is it that really sets hotel Mivka apart from the rest?

Intervening in a typical habitation of the urban tissue of Oporto city is by itself a reason for the memory theme running through our thoughts, as the memory itself begins to delineate like a programme, a "tool" capable of functioning as a moderator element between the "old" and the "new". This project tries to recreate the habitation spaces (an element which is a container and generator of memories), preserving the identity of the architectonic object which already exists, but with a greater cosmopolitan and contemporaneous touch, searching for a symbiosis between two chronologically distant languages, intending to create an "actualized" architectonic object belonging to the sensorial universe of this place from Oporto city.

Exploring Cultural Heritage Collections With Recollection

Exploring Cultural Heritage Collections With Recollection

The following is a guest post by Trevor Owens, Digital Archivist with the Office of Strategic Initiatives.
For my first post, I wanted to introduce readers to Recollection, a free and open tool NDIIPP is working on. Recollection is a free, open source platform that lets archivists, librarians, scholars and curators create easy to navigate web interfaces (like maps, timelines, facets, tag clouds) to their digital, cultural heritage collections. If you think Recollection might be useful to your organization, we encourage you to take a minute to request an account for the beta version of this software. A recent article in Fast Company provides an excellent overview of the Recollection software, and I encourage interested readers to check out that post. The goal for this post is to show a little bit of what Recollection can let you do for an individual collection. For my illustration, I will use the example of a collection of historical postcards.
The Recollection workflow starts with importing data about the collection. For this example I will start with a spreadsheet of information about a collection of digitized postcards. Recollection can import other kinds of data, but spreadsheets work great as examples.
The screenshot of the spreadsheet in Example 1 gives a sense of what we are starting from. Each row includes information about the individual cards, and each column contains specific information and links related to those cards. When you are logged in to Recollection you can click the upload data button to select and upload the data.

International Conference on Preventive Conservation at Nanjing, China, 29-30 October 2011

International Conference on Preventive Conservation of Architectural Heritage, 29-30 October, 2011, Nanjing, China

The challenge identified in the conservation field today is about assuring heritage preservation through preventive conservation, maintenance and monitoring based strategies. Timely identification and correction of defects can prevent major consequential damage, which may lead to heavy investments in order to bring the listed or valuable non listed building back into a good state of repair. Monitoring systems allow public authorities, owners and site managers to ascertain that maintenance is carried out on a regular basis and that the budgets are spent effectively at the long run, also after restoration. When regular maintenance is carried out the preservation of historic buildings will be more cost effective at the long run. As a result of systematic collection of information during the regular inspections (monitoring of the state of repair) it becomes possible to compare and monitor the state of preservation of the cultural heritage "stock". Collected statistic data can also be used as a management tool as well as for research.
