Design concept and solution: The Asymptote team wanted to create a landmark for Yas Island that would draw on local and global influences and provide a sense of spectacle.
Two 12-story hotel towers (one set within the race circuit, the other over the marina) are linked with a monocoque steel and glass bridge that passes over the racetrack. The towers are united under a vast glass sheath. This curvilinear shell, made up of more than 5,000 diamond-shaped glazed panels, uses geometric repetition to evoke Islamic craft traditions. During the day it reflects the sky and the surroundings; at night the hotel's lighting programs take over, changing the colors of the panels through the shell's LED illumination system.
