Vertical Theme Park / Ju-Hyun Kim

Ju-Hyun Kim, director at New York-based H Associates, has shared with us his vision of a Vertical Theme Park in the middle of Manhattan. The project tries to counteract suburb-located theme parks which, for decades, have been the by-product of automobile-centered society and a catalyst for suburban sprawl and traffic congestion.

24 hour open theme park
Project Description from the Architect:
As families make their way through traffic jams and endless parking lots in the direction of Six Flags this summer, it will come as no surprise that theme parks were built for an automobile-centric society. As a result, they're out in the middle of nowhere--you have to drive through miles of traffic to get there, leaving a huge carbon footprint along the way. Building suburban theme parks is not just happening in the US, but is a global phenomenon. In the UK and Korea, Thorpe Park and Everland are about 1.5 hour drive away from London and Seoul, respectively.

Future Architecture : Floating Ecopolis for Climate Refugees
2570505804 94295a6338 Future Architecture : Floating Ecopolis for Climate Refugees

According to the less alarming forecasts of the GIEC (Intergovernmental group on the evolution of the climate), the ocean level should rise from 20 to 90 cm during the 21st Century with a status quo by 50 cm (versus 10 cm in the 20th Century). As a solution to this alarming problem architect Vincent Callebaut came up with this ecotectural marvel that could serve as a luxurious future retreat for 50,000 inhabitants seeking refuge from rising waters due to global warming. He believes the world will be desperately seeking shelter from the devastations of climate change, and hopes the auto-sufficient amphibious city will serve as a luxurious solution. To bad that right now we are close to 7 billion people and this luxurious future retreat is just for 50,000 inhabitants ( just for rich people ).

British home designer Duncan Jackson recently joined forces with architectural firm Piercy Conner to transform an 1880 defense tower in Suffolk, England into a stylish and accommodating home. The defense tower, being a historically-registered building, was transformed whilst maintaining its structural appearance and integrity. The project came with a list of obstacles, including the tower's round structure, minimal windows, 12 foot-thick walls and wetlands environment. Despite these hurdles, the joint venture successfully created a contemporary home with an abundance of light, warmth and a streamlined interior design.

Motorized door technology adapted from airplane hangars and factory buildings, plus recycled materials from two abandoned warehouses have been used to create a dramatic, industrial-inspired facade for the Wyckoff Exchange in the Bushwick section Brooklyn, New York. The 100-foot-long, eighteen-foot-tall facade is only two inches deep, a feat achieved by architecture and design firm Andre Kikoski Architect (AKA) through innovative technology and construction processes.

Gehry's centre for New World Symphony in Miami opens today

For years classical music has been tainted with a stigma of being stuffy, out of touch and somewhat redundant as regards contemporary culture; the home of the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Florida is looking to combat this unfortunate branding head on with a sculptural new rendition by 81 year old architect Frank Gehry.

Forum des Halles, Paris

Forum des Halles, Paris

Forum des Halles
Address: Les Halles Metro Station
Arrondissement: 1st
About the Forum des Halles
Paris' Forum des Halles has a unique 800 year history. From 1200 through 1500, the area was a thriving marketplace which specialized in tasty foods and a variety of businesses. Parisian's came here to mill about, shop and enjoy food and friends into the wee hours of the morning.
However, as the city grew larger the congestion that Halles created became too much for the citizens of Paris. In the 1960s the cafes and stalls were moved to Rungis, a suburban area near the Orly Airport.
As much as Parisian's thought that the move of Halles was for the best, they were equally appalled at the disgraceful hole left behind from a marketplace that had thrived in their city for centuries on end. It was dubbed "le trou des Halles" which translates to the hole of the Halles. So the city did them one better and filled in the gaping fissure with yet another place that Parisian's could come to mill about, shop and enjoy food and friends into the wee hours of the morning.

An ambitious project that aims to turn arid desert land into a green oasis took a step closer to becoming reality last week when an agreement was signed on the rights to develop a pilot system in Jordan. The Sahara Forest Project's (SFP) first facility will be located on a 2,000,000 square meter (21,527,821 sq. ft.) plot of land in Aqaba, a coastal town in the south of Jordan where it will be a test bed for the use of a combination of technologies designed to enable the production of fresh water, food and renewable energy in hot, arid regions.

JD House by Bak Architects

JD House by Bak Architects

BAK Architects is probably one of my favorite Architectural Firms. The JD house, which just finished construction this year, is set in the forest of Mar Azul in the Argentinian province of Buenos Aires. I love the use of wood as a design element in this house. The concrete also adds to the natural theme of the home. An additional design feature is the way the home was created around the some of the mature trees of the forest. Although I don't know how growth would affect the deck, it's definately an interesting touch.

As part of an international competition, 1982-83, to revitalize the abandoned and undeveloped land from the French national wholesale meat market and slaughterhouse in , , Bernard Tschumi was chosen from over 470 entries including that of OMA/Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, and Jean Nouvel.  Unlike other entries in the competition, Tschumi did not design the park in a traditional mindset where and nature are the predominant forces behind the design [i.e. Central Park].  Rather he envisioned Parc de la Villette as a place of culture where natural and artificial [man-made] are forced together into a state of constant reconfiguration and discovery.

The Lakewood House, designed by Centerbrook Architects and Planners, integrates into its surrounding landscape, and utilizes a closed-loop geothermal heating and cooling system, natural and local materials, and passive solar design. This project was awarded a 2009 AIA Connecticut Design Award for Residential Built Design. The Jury commented that, "The house draws you in because of the fineness of its structure. The viewer wants to see beyond the whimsical, unique sunscreen, but wishes it to remain in place because of its total integration with the structure. The fabric of the building is well thought out, and its scale attracts the viewer."
